Sunday 18 June: East Finchley Festival

We will have a stall at the East Finchley Festival on Sunday 18th June. The BCC will have a cycle jumble box at the stall, like the one we have at meetings though on a bigger scale. If have any cycle jumble, ideally bring it along to the festival yourself. If you are not able to come to the festival but have some cycle jumble you want to contribute, please contact me on 020 8455 5174 / 07961 194 771 or  charles.harvey@hotmail.co.uk and I may be able to collect it.

REMINDER:  Thursday 27 April: Monthly Meeting – The niche world of Ultra Endurance Racing on a Brompton

Something a bit different this month:

Please join us at 8pm on Thursday 27th April, when James Houston will give us a talk on his experience of Ultra Endurance Racing on a Brompton folding bicycle.

James has now ridden five races and has mastered the art of sleeping at bus stops, dining at petrol stations, and cycling over mountaintops at night during thunderstorms.

James will talk about how he got into long-distance cycling, explain how Ultra Endurance Racing works, and will give us his personal insights into how he prepares his bike, trains for events, and chooses which kit to bring.

He’ll then take us through his experience of competing in last year’s Transcontinental Race – a 4,000+ km unsupported race from Belgium to Bulgaria.

————————————————————————————————————–

The pattern of meetings is the last Thursday of the month. If you have any suggestions for topics for these meetings please get in touch.

Meet: 8pm, Trinity Church Centre, Nether Street, North Finchley N12.

All welcome.

Would you like to be involved in UCL’s 100 Cyclists Project?

A message from London Road Safety Council aimed at those who commute to work by bike:

We are looking for cyclists aged 18 or over who cycle in London using their own bike as part of a commute to work. The aim of the project is to understand near misses experienced along different routes in London using a GoPro helmet mounted camera (we have helmets to lend for the project) where you can record a near miss vocally.  We would want you to record near misses over a two-week period. If you would like to find out more, please contact Nicola or James on email:

BHF London to Brighton Bike Ride 18th June 2023

We have been contacted by the fundraiser for The Loss Foundation – the UK’s only charity to specialise in cancer loss support. If you interested please follow the links below:

Have you lost a loved one to cancer? The Loss Foundation – the UK’s only specialist cancer bereavement charity – are looking for cyclists for the sponsored BHF London to Brighton Bike Ride 2023 (18th June 2023).

Your pedal power would ensure no one faces the devastation of cancer loss alone.

How do I take part?

Registration costs £30 and all participants are required to raise a minimum of £300 for The Loss Foundation (£300 would send 30 people lost in grief to their first support meeting). All money raised will go directly to funding our bereavement support services.

As part of The Loss Foundation team, you will get:
– A free fundraising pack
– Regular emails ahead of race day to help you prepare
– A cycling jersey (if you raise the £300 sponsorship ahead of race day)

There are a limited number of charity places available, so enter now to secure your place.

London Moonwalk 20/21 May 2023 – Cyclists Needed

We’ve been contacted by “Walk the Walk” about encouraging cyclists to volunteer to help with marshalling on the “Moonwalk” on 20/21st May. The Moonwalk is an overnight marathon length walk through central London in aid of Cancer Charities (especially but not exclusively breast cancer charities).

Cyclists are essential to the volunteering effort because they can easily reach parts of the route that support vehicles can’t and are able to respond quickly to hotspots on the route where additional help is needed, cyclists navigate the front walkers around the route, and others follow the end of the walk looking after the weary last walkers. Cyclists sign up for one, or two, shifts – from about 9pm (Saturday)  to 7am Sunday and then from about 7am Sunday to 12 noon.

They need about 60 or 70 cyclists. It is a quite brilliant and uplifting night out with a joyous atmosphere, and millions of pounds will be raised. You can also help by getting sponsored as a volunteer (but you do not have to – your time and enthusiasm is all that is needed).

All the details about the Moonwalk and how to volunteer are on the WTW website https://walkthewalk.org/volunteer/moonwalk-london-volunteer

Cyclists do need to be over 18 – because you’ll be out in the wee small hours.

Feel free to contact Richard below if you need more information specifically about the cycle marshal role.
