MEETING REMINDER: Thursday 30th January: Monthly Meeting

First evening meeting of 2020. To start with we will deal with business as usual, have a cup of coffee with a chat and a chance catch up with what everyone has been doing. In the second half Ray Thorn will do ‘a show and tell’ about the bike he has adapted for night riding. And he does some extreme ‘night riding’!   Do come and share your tips for staying safe in the dark – bring any clothing and bits of gear you can recommend – or even advise not to waste time on!

Meet: 8pm Carey Hall, Trinity Church Centre, Nether Street, North Finchley N12.

All welcome.

Ted Talk by Rob Ainsley on Cycling

This short video is part of last week’s Cycling UK “Cycle Clips” submitted by Charles H. Several Barnet cyclists have watched it and thought it a “nice amiable and personal account of the joys of cycling”.

It is 12 minutes long and covers thoughts on why people may like to cycle as well as some issues on expectations of climate changes in the UK and longer term views in a sort of upbeat manner.

Ride leaders wanted!

Ask not what your cycle club can do for you – ask what you can do for your cycle club! (Apologies to JFK). New year coming up and we need ride leaders for TUAGs and 3rdSunday rides. We have some ideas, and some vague offers to help, but we need to pin people and dates down.  Following on from our discussion on rides last year, we are planning have a follow-up at an upcoming evening meeting which we hope will help expand our rota of ride leaders. We have a core group of ride leaders who do such a great job but we need more people to come forward.

In the meantime, we need people to offer to lead rides on Sunday 16thFebruary and Sunday 15thMarch. If you can help please contact Alison at alison.ewington@ntlworld.com   or phone 01707 376282

Improving air quality in East Finchley What can we do?

FIND OUT Thursday October 17th at 7pm

Martin School Hall, Plane Tree Walk, High Road, East Finchley, London N2 9JP

Breathing polluted air harms our health, even when we might not feel the effects day to day.  Many Londoners -including in East Finchley-are living in areas that exceed the World Health Organisation guidelines. Half of this pollution is caused by road traffic but other factors such as dust from construction works have an impact. This meeting is an opportunity to get an overview of the problem and to assess what individuals, schools and other organisations and the wider community can do to improve the situation.

Speakers:

Leonie Cooper Greater London Assembly Member for the Labour and Cooperative Party (environment lead)

Pupil Representative from Martin School Eco Council on initiatives taken by one school community

Spokespersonfrom London Borough of Barnet Invited

Study on Cycling: Can You Help?

Christopher Bonner is a student at Royal Holloway University of London and has requested of Barnet Cycling Campaign if they and others would be able to complete a survey on cycling experiences:

“I am recruiting participants for a nationwide study exploring experiences of cycling. In particular, the study aims to explore the types of beliefs that UK cyclists hold about other road-users whilst cycling. It involves completing a short questionnaire that will take about 10-12 minutes.

“The questionnaire can be accessed using this link:

As a way of saying ‘thank you’, participants have the option of being entered into a prize draw to win a £100 Amazon gift voucher.

Best wishes,
