LB Barnet Draft (transport) Local Implementation Plan 3 2018-2041

This response to the consultation is from (Barnet Cyclists), the local borough group of London Cycling Campaign (LCC). We represent the interests of cyclists living or working in Barnet and aim to expand the opportunities for all to cycle safely in the borough.

Map-extract

The draft plan in its current form does not fully address the issues faced by Barnet, in particular the lack of safe space for cycling on direct routes and within neighbourhoods.

Our response identifies further challenges and opportunities, focuses on why the borough transport objectives are not sufficiently robust to achieve the desired shift to walking, cycling and public transport set by the Mayor’s Transport Strategy up to 2041, and suggests further measures and targets.

The consultation was published here: https://engage.barnet.gov.uk/Transport_Local_Plan

Our response focussed on four main topics:

  • Strategic Cycle Network
  • Liveable / Low Traffic Neighbourhoods
  • Behavioural Change
  • Additional Targets

MEETING REMINDER: Thursday 25th October – How do we get bums on saddles?

After the normal ‘business’ meeting to catch up on what has been happening, we want to discuss how we, as a group and as individuals, get others cycling. We will start with Veronica from the ‘Breeze’ initiative who is looking to increase the participation of women in cycling – may with some help from our group. We want to consider what are the barriers to getting our own friends and family out on a bike – and what practical things we can do to help. What advice can we offer on the website, on leaflets? What resources are available? Should we run a programme of ‘beginners’ rides?  Lots of questions – come along and help provide the answers.

All welcome.

Meet: 8pm Carey Hall, Trinity Church, 15 Nether Street, North Finchley N12 7NN

RIDE REMINDER Sunday 21st October: Autumn Leaves

Last ride before the clocks ‘fall back’ so make the most of it with a little tootle about the lanes. Enjoy the fresher days and a bit of autumn colour – in both the trees and your cheeks!  Two routes of differing length will be on offer in the morning – but we will lunch together at The Chequers, Potters Bar. There will be a tea stop in the afternoon – possibly at Shenley Orchard as it is Apple Day.

Meet:10am Tally Ho Corner, North Finchley N12 or 10.30am outside Waitrose,
The Spires, Barnet – Stapylton Road entrance, by the bandstand.

Ride leaders: Talia Ross and Kathryn Ehrich
