Thursday 24 April: Group Meetings (with speaker) & AGM

7pm: Campaign Group meeting to discuss local campaigning issues, including improvements to the A1000, the council’s Transport Strategy, and how to make Barnet a better place for cyclists. All are welcome to attend, so if you want to find out more, please come along!

8pm: Mark Sumner from Barnet Council will come to talk to the group about paths and Rights of Way in Barnet. This is your chance to ask questions and help shape the way paths are managed in Barnet.

AGM: following the discussion we will have the Annual General Meeting of the Barnet Borough Group of the London Cycling Campaign. The Treasurer will present the accounts. Committee officers will be elected: we have nominations for the posts of LCC Co-ordinator, Treasurer and Campaigns Group Co-ordinator. Volunteers are needed for LCC Rides Co-ordinator. Any nominations for committee posts and motions to be debated at the AGM must be sent by 23 April at the latest to alison.ewington@ntlworld.com

We will conclude with a quick round up of anything else happening in the group – and at some point we will fit in a cup of coffee!

London Phoenix Easter Classic

The London Phoenix cycling club, who are based in Barnet and affiliated to the London Cycling Campaign, are running their annual event on Easter Monday 21 April 2025. There are options for 113 km and 54 km road rides, as well as a 70k gravel ride. The start and finish of the event is at Fairlop Waters in East London, and the rides head out into the beautiful Essex countryside. More information can be found here: Easter Classic 2025 — London Phoenix Cycling Club

Ride marshal and leader training

The LCC have started booking and running ride marshal sessions in preparation for London Cycling Festival (formerly called Ciclovia). They want to put on as many as possible in as many different boroughs leading up to the Festival so if your group hasn’t organised one, please get in touch with a date and, if possible, a venue, and Mike McSherry will set you up.

Coming up they have Wandsworth on 10 May, Enfield on 18 May and Women of Colour (date TBC) in Farringdon.

The session on 18 May in Enfield would be of most interest to members in Barnet who are able to help with the Enfield event on 25 May.

Email mike.mcsherry@lcc.org.uk to organise.

All sessions will appear on this URL as soon as they are confirmed: https://lcc.org.uk/organizer/lcc-training/

ENGAGE BARNET SURVEY: Health and Wellbeing Strategy consultation

Barnet Council are consulting on their Draft Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy – on the Engage Barnet website – link below. You can download the draft document from the website – but despite the aims of health and wellbeing there does not seem to be any mention of ‘active travel’ – walking and cycling. This seems like a missed opportunity.

Please have complete the survey and where relevant say how valuable encouraging cycling would be.

The consultation closes on 8 April.

After the usual catch-up on local cycling news and a chance to have a chat over a cup of coffee, we will have a fun quiz. Some questions will be about cycling and transport – and some won’t. Stupendous prizes!
