Women’s Freedom Ride – 6 February

The LCC Women’s Network is identifying parts of the TfL Cycleways network that aren’t safe after dark, especially for women. As part of the launch of the campaign, they’re organising a fun protest ride that will ‘highlight’ these parts of the network on Thursday, 6 February, meeting at 6.15pm at Marble Arch. For more info on the ride please see the event page – https://lcc.org.uk/events/womens-freedom-ride-after-dark/

They are looking for marshals. It is not mandatory to attend the training if you have already received marshal training or if you have lots of experience. But it is mandatory to attend the zoom call (22nd January) and the rehearsal ride on the 30th January. If you have any questions or can’t attend the zoom call on 22nd January or the rehearsal ride on the 30th January, please email mike.mcsherry@lcc.org.uk and the ride leader Mariam will consider what alternative arrangements can be made.

Barnet Council Road Safety Consultations

Barnet Council are consulting on a couple of road safety schemes. See the links below to go to the Engage Barnet website to take part. Some thoughts on possible responses from the Campaign Group are shown below the links.

Note that the consultations close on Thursday 16 January.

Brunswick Park Road and Church Hill Road, road safety consultation | Engage Barnet

  • Support the introduction of a 20-mph limit along the length of the road as proposed
  • Say that the scheme should go further and introduce 20 mph in adjoining streets
  • Suggest that continuous pavements should be used instead of uncontrolled crossings on adjoining side roads

Friern Barnet Lane road safety consultation | Engage Barnet

  • Support the introduction of a 20-mph limit along in the area as proposed
  • Say that the scheme should go further and introduce 20 mph in adjoining streets North of Hemlington Avenue
  • Introduce 20 mph along Friern Barnet Lane and Friern Barnet Roads
  • Ensure that cycle path at the start of Goldsmith Road has sufficient yellow lines to prevent parked cars blocking its exit
  • Reinstate cycle lanes on Friern Barnet Lane that were removed about 20 years ago

REMINDER Thursday 28 November – Meeting: Bike technology – compare and contrast.

After the usual cycling business catch up and coffee break (with mince pies) – two of the group will look at changes in bike tech over the past 20 years or so looking at a traditional steel bike and one the latest models. A lot has changed – for good or bad? Think of it as the Antiques Roadshow meets Brave New World. Where are you on this spectrum?

Sunday 8 December – Christmas Lunch – at Alexander’s in Russell Lane N20. Booking forms, with payment, must be with Ian at this meeting at the latest. Booking form attached here with all the details – you can also book by email and pay by BACs.

Barnet Council-Parking charges consultation

Barnet Council has recently launched a consultation on parking charges, which aims to encourage modal shift from private cars to public transport, cycling and walking. Key points are:

  • Minimum charges will align with bus fares, so 1 hrs parking will cost the equivalent of two single bus journeys, i.e. £3.50 in total
  • The charges will apply in some council owned locations that currently offer free parking
  • Blue badge holders will continue to enjoy free parking
  • Parking charges will apply to motorcycles

The consultation can be accessed here

Parking Charges Policy Consultation | Engage Barnet

and includes a survey which we encourage people to complete. In the “other” boxes you could also take the opportunity to raise the issue of the need for more cycle lanes and some of the following points:

  • Aligning parking fees with bus fares is positive, but the policy could go further in recognition of the social, health and environmental costs to society of private car use versus other forms of transport.
  • The fees being proposed are higher than at present and will generate additional revenue for the Special Parking Account – we would like to see a realignment of the council’s spend on highways to invest more in facilitating active travel, which would help meet targets to increase the share of journeys made by walking and cycling.
  • The council should include a reduction in charges for cycle hangers in the review, as these are currently higher than the charges for some car parking permits in the borough
