Thursday 26 October: Monthly Meeting – Proposed cycle routes in Barnet.

We have a special speaker this month – Costi Rentzoz from Barnet Council.

Costi will provide an overview of the council’s use of the Propensity to cycle (PCT) tool to identify and prioritise potential cycle routes in Barnet. The tool takes into account a number of factors, including air quality, health, gradients and existing behaviour of cyclists. It models three scenarios, ranging from doubling cycling by 2025, going Dutch and the use of e-bikes.

16 potential routes have been identified and the council would like to sense check these with our group.

This discussion will start at 8pm – please come and participate in the future of cycling in Barnet.

Thursday, 28th September: Monthly Meeting – Bike Security and Tips

After business and coffee we’ll be discussing issues on bike security and protection of cycles from theft. With over 18,000 cycles reported stolen to the Met Police last year and only 7% of them solved, bike security is of a major concern. Discussions will centre around the choice of locks and levels of protection and ways and means to improve bike security. Audience participation welcome as we want to learn what works for you and security experiences you have learned from. All welcome and bring along any locks or security devices you would like to show and discuss.

Meet: 8pm Carey Hall, Trinity Church Centre, Nether Street, North Finchley N12

REMINDER:  Thursday 27 April: Monthly Meeting – The niche world of Ultra Endurance Racing on a Brompton

Something a bit different this month:

Please join us at 8pm on Thursday 27th April, when James Houston will give us a talk on his experience of Ultra Endurance Racing on a Brompton folding bicycle.

James has now ridden five races and has mastered the art of sleeping at bus stops, dining at petrol stations, and cycling over mountaintops at night during thunderstorms.

James will talk about how he got into long-distance cycling, explain how Ultra Endurance Racing works, and will give us his personal insights into how he prepares his bike, trains for events, and chooses which kit to bring.

He’ll then take us through his experience of competing in last year’s Transcontinental Race – a 4,000+ km unsupported race from Belgium to Bulgaria.
