Charity spaces on 2023 RideLondonEssex 100 on Sunday 28th May

We have been contacted by the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust. They are a charity based out of Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in Northwood & Charing Cross & Hammersmith hospitals in central London. They raise funds for many types of cancer research including renal, melanoma, prostate and ovarian.

They have 3 charity spaces available for the 2023 RideLondonEssex 100 on Sunday 28th May which is now completely sold out and wondered if any of our members would be interested in taking on this challenge? https://www.ridelondon.co.uk/our-rides/ridelondon-essex-100

They do not charge an entry fee but just ask that each cyclist pledges to raise £500 in sponsorship.

If this is of interest please contact Laura Brown, Operations & Fundraising Administrator on the email below

London Moonwalk 20/21 May 2023 – Cyclists Needed

We’ve been contacted by “Walk the Walk” about encouraging cyclists to volunteer to help with marshalling on the “Moonwalk” on 20/21st May. The Moonwalk is an overnight marathon length walk through central London in aid of Cancer Charities (especially but not exclusively breast cancer charities).

Cyclists are essential to the volunteering effort because they can easily reach parts of the route that support vehicles can’t and are able to respond quickly to hotspots on the route where additional help is needed, cyclists navigate the front walkers around the route, and others follow the end of the walk looking after the weary last walkers. Cyclists sign up for one, or two, shifts – from about 9pm (Saturday)  to 7am Sunday and then from about 7am Sunday to 12 noon.

They need about 60 or 70 cyclists. It is a quite brilliant and uplifting night out with a joyous atmosphere, and millions of pounds will be raised. You can also help by getting sponsored as a volunteer (but you do not have to – your time and enthusiasm is all that is needed).

All the details about the Moonwalk and how to volunteer are on the WTW website https://walkthewalk.org/volunteer/moonwalk-london-volunteer

Cyclists do need to be over 18 – because you’ll be out in the wee small hours.

Feel free to contact Richard below if you need more information specifically about the cycle marshal role.

Ride: Sunday 5 March LCC Women’s Freedom Ride

Do you think that cycling should be for *everyone* in London? Come and join us! This ride – for all who identify as women or non-binary and their allies – is both a celebration and a call to action. Today, less than a third of London’s bike journeys are by women. LCC is holding this ride to call for a London where everyone can cycle, along with our briliant partners Joy Riders and Londra Bisiklet Kulübü. To book a place register here:

Marshall’s needed – Marshal Training
In preparation for the ride, which currently has circa 500 people attending, we have a couple of training sessions. These are not compulsory but are for people who would like to know more about being a marshal and the skills, risk assessments, communication techniques used by the ride leader to keep the ride fun, social and safe. There is a short classroom session followed by a practical session on the road. The first session is in Enfield on the 11th February, the second is in Clerkenwell on the 26th February. Following the session on the 26th, there is also a pre-ride recce of the route we will use on the day. Although we don’t need every marshall to attend this session, it’s important as many marshals as possible are able to take part so the ride leader can explain how they want the marshals to work on the day, different roles at different junctions etc.

Please share this with any interested marshals. Register at the links below.
There are only limited places on the two training sessions.
11th Feb, 10:45-13:30, Enfield https://lcc.org.uk/default-events/ride-marshal-enfield/
26th Feb, 10:00-12:30, Clerkenwell https://lcc.org.uk/default-events/ride-marshal-course-clerkenwell/
26th Feb pre-ride recce starting at Marble Arch, meet at 12:50 for 1pm start https://lcc.org.uk/default-events/pre-ride-recce/

REMINDER Thursday 26 January: Monthly Meeting – What did Santa bring you?

The pattern of meetings is the last Thursday of the month. If you have any suggestions for topics for these meetings please get in touch.

Meet: 8pm, Trinity Church Centre, Nether Street, North Finchley N12.

All welcome.

Sunday 29 May: RideLondon Free Cycle -LAST PLEA FOR MARSHALLS

The LCC have had to close sign ups for the RideLondon FreeCycle due to a shortage of marshals (except in boroughs where there are less than 50 sign ups). This is so they can keep the ride size to safe numbers. If you have friends or contacts who want to take part, they can sign up to be marshals. If they have a big sign up of marshals, they can consider opening some of the rides again. If you have friends, colleagues or contacts who are keen to join and they are confident cyclists, encourage them to sign up to volunteer marshal.
