There will be a chance to talk to two of our members about the LCC ‘Cycle Buddy’ scheme and the ‘Breeze’ women-only rides programme.

As explained in the newsletter, there is a mass cycle ride ‘takin’ the high road’ towards the conference in Glasgow with four members of Barnet Cyclists riding along. They are getting very soggy to highlight a good cause. They are not asking for donations of money – but they are encouraging us to make small pledges to change little things in our life that, cumulatively, will make a real difference. The LCC is recruiting Climate Safe Streets Champions and Suami Rocha, who is running the scheme, hopes to be able to join our meeting and tell us what is involved and how we can take part or spread the word to others. (Postponed from Aug meeting)

We are saddened by the tragic news that for the fifth time in eight years, a person has lost their life at the Holborn gyratory. This time, as so many times across London, it was a woman cycling, hit by a large, turning lorry.
Work on the most dangerous junctions in London had stalled even before the pandemic. During the pandemic we did have a glimpse of what a lower car London can look like; we did see rapid expansion of the cycle network; and we did get increasing awareness in government that active travel has a vital role to play in averting the climate crisis. But we have not seen substantive action on our most dangerous and lethal junctions.
Junctions are where most serious and fatal collisions with those walking and cycling happen. They are the single biggest risk to lives, and the single biggest barrier to more people cycling and walking – particularly to those most put off by hostile road design such as children and parents.
After yet another fatality at Holborn, yet another fatality at Battersea Bridge, multiple fatalities in less than a month in Havering on one road, we do not believe London can delay any more. We are calling on our leaders to reinstate the rapid rollout of safety improvements at every London junction where those walking and cycling lose their lives, with the most dangerous prioritised first. What TfL and DfT call “critical issues” at junctions must be addressed to ensure that every arm of each junction is safe to cycle or walk through. That way these junctions will help realise the Mayor’s “Vision Zero” plan for no fatal road collisions or serious injuries in London by 2041, rather than trash it.

LCC PROTEST RIDE – Wednesday 8 September
Following the horrific and needless death of Dr Marta Krawiec at Holborn, LCC will be riding to the junction where she was killed, along a route featuring several of London’s other deadly junctions, also left for years without appropriate safety interventions. Please join us to demand an end to delays over action on junctions known to be dangerous, even lethal, for years.

East Finchley Festival – a Late Summer Social – will be held this Sunday – the 5th September at Cherry Tree Wood, N2. It will be open from 12pm-6pm.
Barnet Cyclists/Breeze/Better Streets for Barnet will be having a stall and this is a good chance to meet other cyclists from the groups in person – or to encourage people you know that are interested into getting into cycling to come along and have a chat. Lots to talk about – riding locally with a group or finding your own routes (we still have some TFL cycle maps to give away), women who want a bit of help to get into group rides can talk to the Breeze leaders. Find out mor about the Cycle Buddies scheme. If you are interested in campaigning to improve the conditions on the roads of Barnet come and talk to the Better Streets for Barnet people. Lots of opportunities for getting involved – spread the word!

Dr Marta Krawiec’s death last week at a known blackspot in Holborn has angered cycle users – and medics, too, across London. We’ve had enough of losing loved ones. We don’t want to keep having to do this, especially not in Holborn. The two protests are well-spaced to keep momentum going, and it’s not an either/or – do join both if you can.
