Barnet and 20mph

Hello everyone,

My name is Arthur from the West Hendon ward of Barnet and I am currently setting up a 20mph campaign for Barnet. The campaign is to advocate low speed zones to address traffic speeding and road safety problems in the interests for vulnerable road users including cyclists. I am working closely with the ‘20’s Plenty for Us’ campaign – for more information, here is the website (https://www.20splenty.org/).

I appreciate the importance of active traveling across the borough of Barnet where the current infrastructure is little behind as compared to neighboring boroughs. I also see a distinct synergy between advocating active traveling (commuting) alongside low speed zones while taking into account the proposed ‘Barnet Loop’ (leisure oriented) by the council at same time to come up with a holistic network of pragmatic and achievable quick-win cycle routes that would benefit the Barnet Cycling Campaign, the council’s target to increase active traveling mode share, the council’s goal of implementing the ‘Barnet Loop’ as well as our 20mph campaign.

Please refer to the attached files – a summary of identified roads and index plan for easy understanding of the envisaged desirable cycling network across the borough to be accompanied by 20mph initiatives. I would be much appreciate to have your feedback on the following:

– suitability of the identified roads as cycling route and any traffic issues that you are aware of;

– missed links for cycling to supplement the envisaged cycling network;

– any roads that you have already raised to councillors of your ward for better cycling infrastructure; and

– any other roads that you see traffic issues and safety concerns that might warrant low speed zones.

Once the desired cycling network is consolidated with your feedback, I will take that to councillors of the respective wards for further coordination which I may kindly ask for the supports of you as local residents to back up the advocacies on active traveling and 20mph. I will also keep Councillor Alan Schneiderman involved throughout the process with individual wards to ensure a holistic approach to our advocacy across the borough instead of fragmented / segmented asks with individual wards.

Thanks for your kind attention and look forward to your feedback towards better active travel for the Barnet!

Best regards,

Arthur
